Count words and characters the moment you type

Whether you’re trimming a tweet to fit, checking that an Instagram bio lands under 150 characters, or making sure a meta description won’t get truncated in Google, the numbers matter. This word and character counter updates instantly as you type or paste, so you never have to guess how long your text is.

What it measures

  • Words — useful for articles, scripts and essays.
  • Characters (with and without spaces) — the number social platforms actually limit.
  • Sentences and paragraphs — quick readability signals.
  • Reading and speaking time — handy for captions, voiceovers and presentations.

Built-in platform limits

The limit bars show how your text measures against the real caps on X/Twitter, Instagram captions and bios, TikTok, YouTube titles, LinkedIn posts and SEO meta descriptions. When you go over, the bar turns red so you know exactly how much to cut.

Private and instant

Everything is calculated locally in your browser. Your draft never leaves your device, which makes this safe for confidential copy, client work, or anything you’d rather not paste into a server-side tool.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?+

We split your text on whitespace, so any run of letters, numbers, or symbols separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word — the same method word processors use.

Do emojis count as one character?+

We count by Unicode code points using the platform's own logic, so most emojis count as a single character. Note that some networks (like X) count certain emojis as two, which is why our limit bars are a close guide rather than an exact mirror of every platform.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?+

No. Counting happens live in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or saved.

How is reading time calculated?+

Reading time assumes about 230 words per minute (average silent reading) and speaking time about 130 words per minute (a comfortable presentation pace).
